A tragic end

Halloween 20 years ago saw the tragic death of a talented actor named River Phoenix, outside the Viper Room nightclub part-owned by Johnny Depp.

River was born in 1970  to John and Arlyn Bottom, they joined the Children of God cult while River and his siblings were young and the family moved over 40 times around the USA and down to South America. The children never went to school and spent a lot of their time performing on the streets and handing out literature from the cult. River was a self taught guitarist starting at the age of 5.

All the children were spotted by a talent scout while singing on the street , but initially River was the most successful doing a variety of television work in his early career. His break into films came with The Explorers and the wonderful coming of age film Stand by me. He seemed to favour the quirky, independent and off the wall films, the only blockbuster he did was a small role as the young Indiana in The last Crusade.

I have 4 favourite films:

Running on empty: River plays a teenager on the run with his fugitive parents, struggling with the constant moving and loyalty to his family. His performance is beautiful and shows maturity beyond his years. He received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for best support actor for this role.

I love you to death: River’s performance as a young, spiritual hippy is heart warming and funny alongside Kevin Kline and Tracy Ullman.

Dog Fight: This role, as a marine on his last night before being shipped out to Vietnam, was reported to be one of the most difficult for River due to the character being so far removed from his own.

My own private Idaho: This was an outstanding performance as a gay hustler searching for his mother, River delivers in a sensitive and poignant way that is quite stunning. For this role he won 3 awards including the Independent Spirit Award for a movie lead.

River never had any acting training but he could morph completely into his character and act with the sensitivity, depth and expertise of a much older actor.

As well as being a fantastic actor River was also an accomplished musician and singer/song writer and along with his sister Rain he formed the band Aleka’s Attic. They played at many charity events for environmental causes. He got to use his singing talents in the film The Thing called love, when he played a country singer. On the night of his death he was hoping to have a jamming session with Johnny Depp and Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

A committed vegan from an early age he was a dedicated animal rights activist, environmentalist  and a spokesperson for PETA. He donated a lot of his money to environmental and humanitarian causes and bought 800 acres of rain-forest in Costa Rica.

The cause of his death was confirmed as a drug induced heart failure, he had Heroin and Cocaine in his system. This came as a shock to his fans as he seemed to be a clean living and healthy young man, but it transpired after his death that he had been struggling with drug addiction for approximately 2 years.

Going for gold

Operation “Get my life back on track” started with a visit to Scotland for my interview to volunteer at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

My best friend, Janey, and I decided to go for a couple of days as she had a friend nearby that she hadn’t seen in years.

The start of our journey was hampered by Janey’s dodgy directions, a tractor, a recycling lorry and a funeral procession. But in no time we were tarted up in duty free and sat on Sleazy Jet bound for Edinburgh guzzling G & T’s and Bacardi. By the time we landed we were like a couple of giggling teenagers.

We stayed in the Caravel Guest House about 10 minutes walk from the city centre. It was clean, comfortable and run by a lovely and welcoming young couple.

Day 2 was interview day so I boarded the express train to Glasgow while Janey went off to meet her long lost friend. Luckily Commonwealth Games HQ was a short walk from the station and as quick as a flash I was welcomed in and processed by an army of volunteers. The interview went extremely well but I will have to wait a while longer before I know if I get the chance to rub Usain Bolt’s leg.

Unfortunately I didn’t get the express train back and seemed to stop at every station in Scotland!  After what seemed like an eternity, I eventually met up with Janey and her friend Nicky and we managed to spend the best part of 4 hours chatting, drinking wine and eating cream teas.

Day 3 was dedicated to sightseeing on Royal Mile, finding a cafe that served Neaps and Tatties and staying out of the relentless rain.

We had a fabulous time away and it was just what I needed to try and put my troubles behind me and forget about them for a while.

Attack of the Turkish love rat

It’s my sad duty to announce the end of operation “Get Hasan to the UK”, my quest to help get my Turkish husband a visa to live in England with me.

I have too much dignity to write about the details but suffice to say I have been betrayed in the cruelest possible way. A month ago I discovered that for the last year my marriage has been a lie and the more I hear, I fear that the last five years have been a sham. The focus and aims of the last eighteen months have been destroyed.

At first I was devastated and heartbroken, but now I feel so angry at him, at her and at myself for being foolish enough to trust him for so long.

What shocks me the most is that I didn’t see it coming because I have been so blinded by love and working hard to help him get here.

The reason for this post? certainly not to slag off Turkish men, there must be some good ones somewhere.

I wanted to share what has happened as so many of my merry band of followers have supported me throughout this quest with lovely comments.

The name of my blog “Back to life” has taken on a new meaning now, originally it was a journey of recovery from illness to the land of working and living. Now I have another journey to make, to rebuild my life and move on.

I have fantastic support from my family and friends, they have been invaluable throughout this first month when the hurt was unbearable. I’m sure with their continued love and care I will get through this.

The 12.37 from Dunster

On the second day of our short break in the beach chalet we decided to take the steam train from Dunster to Watchet.

The West Somerset Railway operates a quaint and very popular steam train service from Bishops Lydeard to the seaside resort of Minehead. The station at Dunster opened in 1874, the stone station house is a grade II listed building and I believe the signs and fixtures are original too. It was like stepping back in time standing on the platform especially when the train came steaming towards us.

The journey took less than 25 minutes initially along the coast, then through the countryside and very soon we arrived at Watchet station, another lovely station trapped in a time warp. This station was first opened in 1862 and the cute waiting room comes complete with a coal fire, a cafe and second hand bookshop which provided much needed shelter from the rain when waiting for the train back.

Watchet harbour is a very short walk from the station over the railway bridge, it was first recorded in the Dark Ages when a physician later called St. Decumen sailed from South Wales on a raft with a cow!

Above the harbour is Daws Fort that was built in the Iron Age for protection and was rebuilt by King Alfred to fight off the Vikings invading from the Bristol Channel.

The small resort gets it’s name from wacet, the blue dye found in the cliffs and it was an early trading centre, in the 10th Century coins were minted there for Ethelred II and five more Saxon kings.

Eating lunch and a wander around the shops and harbour took the best part of 3 hours and soon we were chugging away back to our temporary home. This time we managed to get a seat in one of the little compartments and this afforded a much better view for us all the way back.

Saved by Bob

When I was away on my weekend break I found a book in the beach chalet that I’ve wanted to read for a while. It took only 2 days to read ” A street cat named Bob “. It tells the true story of a homeless, recovering drug addict James and his pet cat, Bob, who he found injured and nursed him back to health.

The pair became inseparable and Bob goes busking with James and sits with him while he sells the ” Big Issue ” on the streets of London. Due to the popularity of the book this duo are internationally famous.

The book is so uplifting and heartwarming about a young man on the brink and pulling himself back with the help of this lovely ginger tom.

A thoroughly British getaway

Last week my bestest friend Jane and I went away for a long weekend break to Dunster Beach in Somerset. We were very lucky to be staying in a beach chalet right on the beach owned by a friend of Jane’s. We couldn’t have stayed in a nicer place, it was absolutely delightful. It was tastefully decorated and very cosy.

Our first excursion out of the chalet was a lovely riverside walk to Dunster Village and a visit to the castle. This medieval village dates back to bronze and iron age Britain and up to the 12th century came right up to the edge of the village but now it’s a mile away from the coastline. It was once a centre for the wool industry specialising in weaving and in 1601 a yarn market was established in the high street, it’s now a rather swish hotel.

Next stop was the steep climb up to Dunster castle, now a 17th Century stately home owned by the National Trust. The site has been fortified since the late Anglo Saxon period and after the Norman conquest a timber castle was constructed by William de Mohun. Over the years the castle was rebuilt and improved upon until it was sold at the end of the 14th Century to the Luttrell family.

During the English civil war the family were on Cromwell’s side until Royalists attacked the castle in 1643, they subsequently surrendered and switched sides. The young Prince Charles, the future King Charles II, stayed there at times and the bedroom he slept in had a secret passageway behind the wall where the young prince could hide if Cromwell’s men came searching.

The gardens and grounds are beautiful with a fantastic display of flowers, luckily for us the gardener was selling off plants grown for the gardens and we bought a couple of agapanthus  that will hopefully grow into the lovely specimens they had throughout the gardens.

The Luttrell legacy lives on in the village with the Luttrell Arms Hotel and bar, the gardens were used during the siege of the castle by Cromwell’s men.

We spent most evenings at the pub as they were hosting the Dunster live music festival, our favourite band was a Bristol based skiffle band called Slapface and the Hoagies. they were fantastic entertainment and we loved them.

The madness of Murray mania

British tennis certainly had a massive lift this year with Andy Murray winning the men’s title, the first for 77 years since Fred Perry in 1936. It was a huge achievement and we should be very proud of him. But there are many people, the Prime minister included, who are calling for him to be knighted.

Am I the only person who thinks this is a tad too far for a young man of 26 years old who has only won 2 grand slam championships. Lets exam the careers of other British tennis players to compare.

Fred Perry was our most successful male tennis player winning all four grand slams; US Open 1933, 1934, and 1936, Australian Open 1934, French Open 1935 and Wimbledon an amazing 3 times 1934, 1935 and 1936. He also won doubles in the Australian Open in 1934 and the French Open in 1933, mixed doubles in the French Open in 1932, the US Open in 1932 and Wimbledon twice in 1935 and 1936.  Was he knighted? no and he never got any honours not even an OBE. There is a statue of him at Wimbledon now, but this wasn’t put there until 1984, 5 decades after his last Wimbledon win.

fred perry

Ann Jones was an outstanding player. She won the french Open twice in 1961 and 1966 and she won Wimbledon in 1969. She also won the doubles in the French Open in 1963, 1968 and 1969. Was she made a Dame? no and she has never received any other honour either.

Our most recent female tennis winner is Virginia Wade, she won Wimbledon in 1977 and she also won the US open in the same year and the Australian Open in 1972. She also won the doubles in the US open in 1973 and 1975 and in the french Open in 1973.  Was she made a Dame? no but she was honoured with an OBE, but had to wait until 1986.

Please don’t misunderstand me I think Andy Murray has done extremely well and is a talented player,  but let’s not get carried away when other more successful British players seem to have been forgotten in his wake.

Bring me sunshine

I am ashamed to say this poor blog has been hopelessly neglected recently.

Work has got in the way of my writing and I just don’t seem to have the time. I have had plenty of ideas to write about but haven’t had any spare minutes to get them online.

But in just over a week I have some much needed time off from work and I’m going over to Turkey to see my lovely hubby.

My holiday romance with my husband continues, having read the small print on the UK Border Agency website I have discovered that I need 6 months payslips and the corresponding bank statements proving my income. So it’ll be another 4 months before Hasan can even apply for his visa, as I’ve only been earning above the required salary for the last 2 months.

There is good news though, Hasan passed his English exam so that’s another thing ticked off the list.

So I’m off to soak up some lovely sunshine, recharge my batteries and hopefully get to spend some time with Hasan, he has to work 12 hour days but may have some days off.

Hanging on in there

The other night I was watching the film “The Lake House”, I’ve watched the film many times because I love it. But this time after it finished I felt really quite sad because of the parallels, (loosely), in my relationship.

For those of you who don’t know the film it’s a fantasy romance where the 2 lead characters, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, are having a relationship but they are separated by time, 2 years. They communicate by letter via the post box at the Lake house where they both live, a bit confusing,  eventually they do meet up in the same time zone and live happily ever after.

Obviously my hubby and I aren’t separated by time, we have the wonderful Skype to keep in contact and I can visit him when annual leave allows, but this living in different countries sucks. I never thought it would be this tough and it’s been made tougher by my HR department’s inability to get  my pay right. As a result I don’t have a valid payslip yet with my correct salary shown for Hasan’s visa application. I sometimes wonder whether we’ll be together over here at all much before Christmas.

I’m sure some of you out there are thinking why don’t I just go back and live with Hasan in Turkey, I know sometimes I think maybe it would be easier. But now I’ve recovered from my illness I want to work, I want to resume my nursing career, a job I love and we need the money. To work in Turkey I would need a work permit, you can only get a work permit for jobs Turks can’t do, there are plenty of  Turkish nurses so I wouldn’t get a permit to do that. I’m not interested in doing poorly paid illegal work, it’s not worth the risk of getting deported and I’m worth more than that.

I can’t face another boring winter with nothing to do and sometimes not enough money to heat the house because there is no work for Hasan. I can’t cope again with not seeing him in the summer when he does seasonal work from 8 in the morning till midnight or sometimes later. In order to have a comfortable life in Turkey you need to have money in the bank or get used to living hand to mouth like a student. I’ve already done that when I was actually a student and have no desire to live like that again.

Also I want Hasan to experience where I come from and my culture. I want him to meet the rest of my family and all my friends. I want him to get a British passport so that he can travel more  freely without having to get a visa. At the moment there’s not many places he can go without a visa, however there are plenty of war torn countries we could holiday in, I hear Syria is lovely this time of year!

I don’t think it’s too much to ask to share my life in my country for a while with the man I love.

But getting back to the film there is a scene where Keanu and Sandra meet at a party and dance to a Paul McCartney song. The song is just beautiful and the lyrics make me weep just a little bit.

Now Keanu and Sandra may not be your cup of tea but I have a soft spot for them, you could always just shut your eyes and listen to the music.

All in a great cause

On Saturday a group of mainly women from a few local classes, a couple of husbands were dragged along,  got together to do a charity zumba session. With our zumba instructors for 2 hours we salsa’d, shimmied, jumped, twisted and turned in aid of the charity Women’s Aid.

Women’s Aid is a national charity dedicated to the welfare and protection of women and children who suffer domestic abuse. They have been around for more than 30 years working to promote women’s rights, to try and prevent domestic abuse and to support those affected by this despicable crime.

We had a great time even though we didn’t know half the routines as the instructors took it in turns to lead a routine and we only knew the dances our instructors did in our weekly classes. But that didn’t matter because we still got the exercise trying to catch up!

I did take some photos but I don’t think my fellow zumberers would appreciate being shown online having just done 2 hours of intense exercise, I certainly don’t want to show you all my red face and my sweaty hair stuck to my head!

Here is a link to Women’s Aid website  http://www.womensaid.org.uk
